WIESBADEN – Roughly 101,200 of the 51.7 million pigs slaughtered in slaughterhouses in Germany in 2020 were unfit for consumption, according to official meat inspection, and were declared as such by the authorities. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this is 0.2% of the pigs slaughtered and inspected. For chickens for fattening, the proportion was higher. The veterinary authorities declared 10.7 million animals as unfit, which is 1.7% of the total 636.3 million chickens for fattening slaughtered.
