WIESBADEN – Reducing the burden on long-distance drivers by tax breaks for commuters has frequently been a point in the debate about increasing petrol prices and the CO2 charge. Based on data from the tax returns, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has calculated how many commuters use a car for at least part of their journey to work. According to these calculations, roughly 18.4 million commuters indicated in 2017 that they used a car to cover at least part of the distance to get to work. This was a proportion of 88%.
