WIESBADEN – The lower traffic volume owing to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 had a significant impact on road traffic accidents. According to results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the police recorded just over 2.2 million traffic accidents in Germany in 2020. This was a decrease of 16.4% compared with 2019. There was only material damage in just under 2.0 million accidents, while people were injured or killed in roughly 264,000 traffic accidents. The number of accidents involving material damage declined by 17.0% on 2019 and that of accidents involving personal injury by 11.9%.
