Press Livestock farming in the last decade: less but larger holdings

WIESBADEN – The number of agricultural holdings in which livestock was kept in Germany amounted to roughly 168,800 in 2020. In 2010 the number was just under 216,100. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the number of holdings keeping livestock was down by 22% in the last decade. This is one of the final results derived from the 2020 Census of Agriculture. All in all, 64% of the roughly 262,800 agricultural holdings in Germany were engaged in livestock farming; this was a decline of 8 percentage points on 2010.
