WIESBADEN – The question of how mobility can be sustainable and affordable also in the future is the starting point of many discussions at present. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that households in 2018 spent an average 233 euros on the maintenance and use of cars and other motor vehicles. An average 33 euros was spent on bus, railway and taxi services. The level of expenditure on the different forms of mobility strongly depends on the monthly household income. Expenditure on car use – this includes items like motor fuels, spare parts, maintenance, rent for parking space and expenditure on motor vehicle tax and insurance – rise continuously with higher household income. Households in the highest income class of 4,000 euros per month spent an average 388 euros per month. This is almost ten times the amount spent by households in the lowest income class (less than 1,100 euros per month), that is just 40 euros on average.
