WIESBADEN – The corona crisis has resulted in an unprecedented decline in the number of new apprenticeship contracts. A total of just 465,700 people in Germany concluded new apprenticeship contracts within the dual system (enterprise/vocational school) in 2020. According to final results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was a decrease of 47,600, or 9.3%, compared with 2019. This is the largest percentage decline since the time series began in 1977 and shows that the coronavirus crisis has had a significant effect on the apprenticeship market.
