WIESBADEN – The traffic volume, which has remained low owing to the coronavirus pandemic, had a significant impact on road traffic accidents also in the first half of 2021. In the first six months of the year, 1,128 people died in road traffic accidents in Germany.According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was a decline of 162 people, or 12.6%, on the first half of 2020. The number of people injured dropped by 10.0% to just under 134,800. The number of people killed or injured in traffic accidents was the lowest ever recorded between January and June of a year since German reunification in 1990. The number fell below the former record low recorded in the first half of 2020.
