WIESBADEN – The coronavirus pandemic has caused a substantial decline in the number of higher education graduates. In the examination year 2020 (winter semester 2019/2020 and summer semester 2020), no more than roughly 477,000 graduates obtained a higher education degree at German institutions of higher education. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was a year-on-year decline of 6% (508,000). The number of graduates increased continuously from 2001, with the exception of 2018 and 2020.
