WIESBADEN – In 2020, 192,300 people were undertaking doctoral studies at German institutions of higher education. Of these, 102,000 were men (53% of all doctoral students) and 90,300 were women (47%). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the average age of the doctoral students was 30.0 years. 43,200 doctoral students (22%) had foreign citizenship.
