Press 2020 Census of Agriculture shows continuing decline in workforce

Press release No. N 053 of 6 September 2021

WIESBADEN – According to representative results of the 2020 Census of Agriculture, roughly 938,000 people worked in Germany’s agriculture between March 2019 and February 2020. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a 15% decline compared with the previous Census of Agriculture in 2010. In the same period, the number of agricultural holdings was down by roughly 13%. Therefore the average number of 3.6 workers per holding was nearly unchanged compared with 2010. However, the number of workers per 100 hectares of utilised agricultural area fell from 6.6 in 2010 to 5.6 in 2020. This development was attributable to the increasing size of holdings and growing use of technology and digitalisation in agriculture.
