WIESBADEN – The low traffic volume owing to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 had a significant impact on the number of traffic accidents involving children. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that roughly 22,500 children were affected by road traffic accidents. This means that every 23 minutes a child was injured or killed in a traffic accident on average. The number of child casualties was by almost 20% lower than in 2019 and was lower than ever since German unification. The number of child casualties under 15 years thus fell faster than the total number of casualties (-15%). The number of children killed was down, too, from 55 in 2019 to 48 last year.
