Press release No. 464 of 1 October 2021
WIESBADEN – The individual Länder have been affected to varying degrees by business insolvencies in the course of the coronavirus pandemic. Bremen was by far the hardest hit in 2020 with a monthly average of 8.3 business insolvency requests per 10,000 businesses. In addition, Bremen was the only Land where more business insolvencies requests were filed in the Covid year of 2020 than in 2019, before special regulations due to the pandemic had entered into force such as the suspension of the obligation to file for insolvency (6,9). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the frequency of insolvency events averaged 4.0 for Germany in 2020, meaning that an average of 4 businesses in 10,000 became insolvent every month. In 2019, that is, before the Covid pandemic, the figure was 4.8 businesses. The indicator relates the number of insolvency requests to the number of businesses liable to pay turnover tax so that regional comparisons can be made.
