WIESBADEN – Roughly 759,000 people worked at German institutions of higher education or university hospitals at the end of 2020. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was 2.9% more than at the end of 2019. The number of people employed as academic staff increased less (+2.0%) than the number of those working in the non-academic areas like administration, library, technical services and care services. At the end of 2020, roughly 344,000 people were employed in those areas at institutions of higher education, which was an increase of 4.0% compared with the end of 2019 (about 331,000).
