Press release No. 502 of 29 October 2021
- Children and youth welfare institutions report roughly 53,600 fewer cases of educational assistance than in 2019
- Decrease in cases of local parenting advice particularly large
- Educational assistance often sought by lone parents
WIESBADEN – In the corona year of 2020, the children and youth welfare institutions in Germany granted educational assistance for young people under 27 in roughly 963,000 cases. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was a decrease of roughly 53,600 cases, or 5%, compared with the previous year. This means that the number of educational assistance cases decreased for the first time, following a continuous rise since the time series started in 2008 and its peak in 2019. At the same time, it fell below the one-million threshold, which it had exceeded since 2018. From 2008 to 2019, the number of educational assistance cases was up by a total of 218,900 (+27%). The development in 2020 is probably due to the general contact restrictions imposed on account of the corona pandemic. This can explain especially the decrease in local parenting advice cases. However, part of the advice centres offered more advice over the phone, which is not covered by the statistics.
