- Accommodation and food service activities: massive losses in turnover in the eastern and western parts in the 1st year of the pandemic, recovery until now only in western Germany
- Manufacturing: slumps in turnover due to Covid-19 more marked in the western part
- Main construction industry: raw materials shortages recently slowed the economy in eastern and western Germany
- Economic performance deteriorated less in the Länder of eastern Germany in 2020
WIESBADEN – The consequences of the Covid-19 crisis were similarly severe for the economy in eastern and western Germany. Although there actually were regional differences in individual economic branches and sectors, the overall picture is rather consistent, as the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports to mark the Day of German Unity on 3 October. Due to existing structural differences between the eastern and western parts of the country, the economic performance of the respective Länder however deviated in 2020.
