Press Automotive suppliers: production of car tyres decreases markedly

Press release No. N 059 of 11 October 2021

  • Production of car tyres at all time low in 2020
  • Production of, and foreign trade with car tyres below pre-crisis level also in 1st half of 2021
  • Delivery bottlenecks and higher demand: import prices of rubber as a raw material markedly up

WIESBADEN – “From October to Easter” is a rule of thumb for changing tyres. Producers are also affected by the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that domestic production of car tyres reached an all time low due to the crisis. In 2020, roughly 36.3 million tyres were produced for passenger cars. That was about a quarter (26.6%) less than a year earlier and a 40.6% decline on 2015. That trend continued in 2021. Although production figures in the first half of 2021 were by 20.0% above those of the same period a year earlier, they were still markedly below the level of the same period prior to the crisis (-25.4% on the first half of 2019).
