Press Increasing use of renewable energy in all EU Member States

WIESBADEN - Renewable energy sources have been increasingly used in all 27 Member States of the European Union (EU) over the last years. On average, renewable energy sources accounted for 19.7% of gross final energy consumption in the EU in 2019, up from 13.9% in 2009. To mark the European Statistics Day on 20 October 2021, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the Northern European countries are pioneers in transforming the energy systems. As early as in 2019, 56.4% of Sweden's gross final energy consumption was from renewable energy sources, which was top in the EU. According to data from Eurostat, the European statistical office, Germany's proportion grew from 10.9% to 17.4% between 2009 and 2019. Hence, Germany ranked 16 among the 27 EU Member States in 2019.
