- Public sector spent roughly 160 billion euros on education
- Coronavirus pandemic led to additional expenditure on digitalisation, hygiene measures and additional care offered
WIESBADEN – The education expenditure of the Federation, Länder and municipalities increased to 159.6 billion euros in 2020. That was an increase of roughly 9.1 billion euros, or 6.0%, compared with 2019. Schools received 76.8 billion euros, which was nearly half (48.1%) of the public education expenditure in 2020. Day care for children accounted for 36.2 billion euros (22.7%) and the higher education sector for 33.2 billion euros (20.8%). These figures were released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in the Bildungsfinanzbericht 2021 (Education Finance Report), based on provisional data of the public budgets.
