Press Number of German students abroad up 2.1% in 2019

Total of 137,900 German students at institutions of higher education abroad

Press release No. 580 of 16 December 2021

WIESBADEN – In 2019, 137,900 German students were studying at institutions of higher education abroad. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was an increase of 2,800, or 2.1%, compared with a year earlier. This growth was mainly due to increases in the two most popular countries of destination, namely Austria and the Netherlands, of 4.1% and 5.3%, respectively. All in all, 30,200 Germans were studying in Austria and 22,400 in the Netherlands in 2019. However, the number of German students in the United Kingdom (14,100), which ranked third among the most popular countries of destination, declined by 7.5% year on year. Detailed data for 2020 which can reflect the consequences of the coronavirus crisis for studies abroad will only be available in the course of 2022.
