  • Daughters leave the parental home earlier: 21% of the 25-year-old daughters lived with their parents in 2020, the figure for sons was 35%
  • Sweden was an exception: everywhere else in the EU, sons left home later than daughters
  • EU comparison: average age of leaving home was 23.8 years in Germany, somewhat below the EU average

WIESBADEN – Many young adults still live with their parents. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that more than a quarter (28%) of the 25 year olds were still living in their parents' household in 2020. Sons need more time before they decide to move out: at the age of 25, one in three sons (35%) still lived with their parents, compared with one in five daughters (21%).
