WIESBADEN – The expenditure of the overall public budget rose by 6.1% to 1,306.6 billion euros in the first three quarters of 2021 compared with the same period a year earlier, and revenue increased by 6.7% to 1,146.2 billion euros. These are provisional results of the core and extra budgets of the quarterly cash statistics. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a cash deficit, as defined in public finance statistics, of 160.4 billion euros in the period from January up to and including September 2021. In the first three quarters of 2020, the financial deficit in the overall public budget amounted to 157.1 billion euros, while a financial surplus of 18.8 billion euros had still been recorded in the same period of 2019.
