Press release No. 059 of 11 February 2022
Wholesale selling prices, January 2022
+2.3% on the previous month
+16.2% on the same month a year earlier
WIESBADEN – In January 2022 the selling prices in wholesale trade rose by 16.2% compared with January 2021. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the annual rates of change in December 2021 and in November 2021 had been +16.1% and +16.6%, respectively.
From December 2021 to January 2022 the index rose by 2.3%.
The high rates of change for wholesale prices mainly derive from increased prices for raw materials and intermediate products. The largest impact in January 2022 had the price increase for mineral oil products (+41.9%). The high price increase in wholesale trade of metals and metal ores (+50.2%), as well as waste and scrap (+47.8%) also contributed to the high rate of change in January 2022.
Crisis monitor allows comparison between corona crisis and financial and economic crisis
The index of the wholesale prices is also part of the "Crisis monitor", which is used by the Federal Statistical Office to compare the development of major short-term indicators between the corona crisis and the financial and economic crisis of 2008/2009. The "Corona statistics" complements the "Corona statistics" webpage, which has provided statistical information on the economic and social consequences of the corona pandemic since early April 2020.
More detailed data and long time series are available in table Index of wholesale prices (61281-0002 and 61281-0004) in the GENESIS-Online database.
