- Turnover of trade with China up 15.1% on 2020
- Most German imports came from China in 2021, most German exports went to the United States
- United Kingdom down to tenth in the ranking of trading partners
- Automotive industry increased exports despite delivery bottlenecks
WIESBADEN – The People’s Republic of China was Germany’s most important trading partner in 2021 for the sixth consecutive year. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that goods to the value of 245.4 billion euros were traded between the two countries. Turnover of trade with China increased by 15.1% on 2020. The Netherlands ranked second among the most important trading partners with a turnover of 206.1 billion euros (+20.1%), followed by the United States in third place with 194.1 billion euros (+13.4%). Turnover of trade with the Netherlands and the United States recovered from the slump of 2020, the first year of the Covid-19 crisis (-9.4% and -9.9%, respectively, compared with 2019). Turnover of trade with China, in contrast, had gone up by 3.5% in 2020 despite the crisis.
