WIESBADEN - In 2021, restaurants and accommodation facilities in Germany did not recover from the slumps in turnover recorded in the first Covid crisis year 2020. Turnover in accommodation and food services in 2021 was down 2.2% in real terms (price adjusted) compared with the previous year. In nominal terms (not price adjusted), turnover increased by 0.1%. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that in 2020 and 2021 - the years that were characterised by Covid-related restrictions - turnover in accommodation and food services was at the lowest level since the time series started in 1994. Compared with the pre-crisis year 2019, turnover in accommodation and food services decreased by 40.3% in real terms, and by 36.4% in nominal terms, in 2021.
