Press release No. 073 of 24 February 2022
WIESBADEN – In 2021, 6,260 agricultural holdings in Germany harvested a total 4.3 million tonnes of vegetables. That was 10% more than in 2020 and 15% more than the average of the years 2015 to 2020. Among other things, this was due to the favourable weather conditions in 2021. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the area cultivated with vegetables was extended by 4% to 131,900 hectares compared with 2020. That was an increase of 5% compared with the average of the years 2015 to 2020. Holdings working on an organic basis produced a total of 476,700 tonnes of vegetables on an area of 18,500 hectares. That area accounted for 14% of the total area cultivated with vegetables and for 11% of the total yields. The quantity harvested on organic areas rose by 18% on 2020 and by even 47% compared with the average of the years 2015 to 2020.
