- Non-university research totalled 15.6 billion euros in 2020
- Total expenditure on research and development amounted to 105.9 billion euros, or 3.1% of GDP, according to provisional calculations
WIESBADEN – In 2020, non-university institutions in Germany spent 15.6 billion euros on research and development. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was an increase of approximately 4% compared with the previous year. The increase was mainly due to research projects related to the Covid-19 pandemic and large research projects in other fields. Non-university institutions spent nearly 600 million euros on research activities related to Covid-19, or roughly 4% of their total research expenditure. Non-university research accounted for 15% of total expenditure on research and development in Germany in 2020, according to provisional calculations.
