- German defence expenditure has risen by well over a third since 1991
- Total general government expenditure grew four times faster in the same period
- Defence spending as a proportion of total general government expenditure has nearly halved since 1991, down to 2.1% in 2021
WIESBADEN – In the period from 1991 to 2021, the overall defence expenditure of the Federal Republic of Germany at current prices rose by 35.8% from 28.5 billion euros to 38.7 billion euros. This increase was below average compared with total general government expenditure. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that, according to national accounts results, total general government expenditure grew faster in the same period; it rose by 149.5% from 736.9 billion euros to 1,838.2 billion euros. General government revenue increased by 148.5%, from 686.3 billion euros to 1,705.8 billion euros in the same period. National accounts results broken down by government function are not available on a price-adjusted basis.
