WIESBADEN – Employment was the main source of livelihood for almost half (46 %) of the population in Germany in 2021. Based on first microcensus results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that these were 37.6 million people. Employment was the main source of livelihood for roughly three fourths (73%) of adults aged 18 to 64 years. There were differences between men and women. 79% of the 18 to 64-year old men but only 66% of the women in that age group lived mainly on their own income from employment.
