Press release No. 149 of 6 April 2022

Service sector turnover, January 2022 (provisional, unadjusted values)
+12.6% on the same month a year earlier (in real terms)
+16.6% on the same month a year earlier (in nominal terms)

WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the real (price adjusted) turnover of the service sector in Germany (not including financial and insurance activities) in January 2022 was 12.6% higher, and the nominal (not price adjusted) turnover 16.6% higher than in January 2021. It should be noted that in January 2021 especially consumer service branches were still heavily affected by the Covid-19 related restrictions. Compared with the situation before the Covid-19 crisis in January 2020, turnover in January 2022 was a real 4.0% lower and a nominal 4.9% higher. The difference between the nominal and the real development is due to the fact that producer prices of services had markedly increased.
