WIESBADEN – In 2021, 22.3 million people had a migrant background, representing 27.2% of the population in Germany. Based on results of the microcensus, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was an increase of 2% compared with a year earlier (2020: 21.9 million). According to the definition used here, a person has a migrant background if he or she or at least one parent did not acquire German citizenship bydefinition used here, a person has a migrant background if he or she or at least one parent did not acquire German citizenship by birth.
