Press release No. 209 of 19 May 2022

  • Area under winter wheat sown in autumn 2021 almost unchanged from the previous year
  • In contrast, the area under summer wheat sown in spring 2022 increased by just under three quarters

WIESBADEN – Farmers in Germany are growing winter wheat for harvest in 2022 on 2.89 million hectares. This area is roughly equivalent to the level of the previous year (+0.6% on 2021). Based on first estimates, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that 1.22 million hectares (-1.4%) were sown with winter barley, 596,800 hectares (-5.3%) with rye and maslin (cereal mixtures), and 327,500 hectares (-0.2%) with triticale, the wheat-rye hybrid. As these winter grain varieties were sown in the autumn of 2021, crop planning was not yet affected by the war in Ukraine. In the spring of 2022, significantly larger areas were sown with spring grain in some cases.
