WIESBADEN – The demand for labour in nursing care has been growing for years. Since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, the skilled labour shortage and the working conditions in nursing care have come even more into focus. To mark International Nurses Day on 12 May, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that just under 486,100 people worked in hospital nursing care in Germany on 31 December 2020. This was an increase of 18% compared with ten years earlier. The majority of them (434,400 nurses and auxiliary staff or 89%) had undergone specific nursing training. Almost half (49%) of the people employed in nursing care worked part-time – a total of 238,000 persons.
