Press Electricity production in the 1st quarter of 2022: coal again most important energy source

  • Coal, wind power and photovoltaics generated significantly more electricity than in the 1st quarter of 2021, considerably less electricity came from natural gas and nuclear energy

WIESBADEN – The major part of electricity produced and fed into the grid in Germany in the first quarter of 2022 came again from conventional energy sources. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports, however, that the production of electricity from conventional energy sources decreased by 8.0% compared with the first quarter of 2021. It accounted for 52.9% of total electricity production. In the first quarter of 2021, 59.6% of electricity were produced from conventional energy sources, compared with 48.8% in the first quarter of 2020. That was the first quarter in which most of the electricity fed into the grid came from renewable energy sources. Total electricity fed into the grid in Germany in the first quarter of 2022 increased by 3.7% compared with the first quarter of 2021.
