Press release No. 262 of 23 June 2022
WIESBADEN – At the end of 2020, just over 5.8 million people were employed in the German healthcare system. Of these, just under 3.1 million people worked in medical health occupations (e.g. human medicine or health and nursing care) and just under 2.8 million people were employed in non-medical health occupations (e.g. geriatric nursing, medical, orthopaedic and rehabilitation engineering, or administration). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the number of people employed in medical health occupations rose by 1.5%, or 46,000, in the first Covid-19 year, which was similar to the increase in 2019 (+44,000 or +1.5%). Measured in full-time equivalents (i.e. people employed converted into full time units), there was a slightly stronger increase in medical health occupations in 2020 (+32,000 full-time equivalents or +1.4%) than in 2019 (+26,000 or +1.2%). The results do not include staff of Covid-19 testing stations.
