WIESBADEN – In the second Covid-19 year 2021, the number of people who immigrated to Germany exceeded the number of those who emigrated by roughly 329,000. Compared with the previous year, when the number of immigrants exceeded the number of emigrants by roughly 220,000, net immigration was markedly higher in 2021. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that net immigration across Germany's borders rose in 2021, following a decrease in the previous year, returning to roughly the level recorded before the Covid-19 pandemic broke out (2019: 327,000).
