Press Retail turnover in May 2022 up 0.6% on the previous month

  • Following a slump in April, turnover was slightly down again in food retailing
  • Retail trade in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather products was up by 10.6%

-3.6% on the same month a year earlier (in real terms)
+4.1% on the same month a year earlier (in nominal terms)

WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the real (price-adjusted) turnover of retail enterprises in Germany was 0.6% and the nominal (not price-adjusted) turnover was 2.0% higher, on a calendar and seasonally adjusted basis, in May 2022 compared with April 2022. Compared with May 2021, retail trade recorded a 3.6% decrease in turnover in real terms and a nominal increase of 4.1% in May 2022. The difference between the results in real and nominal terms reflects the high price increases in retail trade.
