Press World Refugee Day: at least 3.3 million refugees and expellees in Germany

Press release No. N036 of 20 June 2022

  • 2.3 million people have immigrated to Germany since 1950 due to flight and expulsion
  • There still are nearly one million World War II expellees

WIESBADEN – The experience of refugees during and after earlier refugee movements is receiving more attention because of the war in Ukraine. In 2021, before the outbreak of that war, at least 3.3 million people were living in Germany who immigrated into Germany (current territory) following flight, expulsion or in search of international protection. To mark World Refugee Day and Germany’s Day of Remembrance for Refugees and Expellees on 20 June, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports, on the basis of data from the 2021 microcensus, that 2.3 million people have immigrated since 1950 due to flight and expulsion. Another 962,000 people are World War II expellees. Data for 2022 are not yet available but expected to be much higher on account of the war in Ukraine and the related immigration of refugees.
