WIESBADEN – Drinking plenty of fluids is important, especially in the summer. Mineral water is the thirst-quenching classic. Its production was however down by 6.3% in 2021 compared with 2020. Roughly 12.4 billion litres of natural mineral water were produced in Germany in 2021, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This is equivalent to approximately 34 million one litre bottles per day. There was a decline of 13.9% last year from the record year of 2018, when a total of 14.4 billion litres of mineral water had been produced. This may be due to the fact that the restaurants were closed during the Covid-19 pandemic, but also to the growing competition in households from water filters and soda makers, which carbonate tap water.
