WIESBADEN – In the debate about providing relief for rising petrol prices, consideration is also being given to increasing the tax break for commuters. Based on tax declaration data, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that roughly 13.7 million employees claimed the mileage allowance in 2018, also referred to as tax break for commuters. They travelled an average of 26 kilometres to work. Approximately 81% of the commuters (11.1 million) stated that they used the car for at least part of their journey to work. This includes only cases where the income-related expenses exceeded the wage or salary earner's standard allowance, which amounts to 1,000 euros. Those with expenses below that amount often did not state the commuting kilometres in their tax declaration.
