WIESBADEN – Looking at how young people live often leads to the question how they make their living. The fact that most of the 15 to 24 year olds are still in school, university or training has an impact on their financial situation. To mark the International Youth Day on 12 August, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that one in two young people (51%) aged between 15 and 24 years mainly depended on the income of parents or other relatives in 2021. 38% earned their own living, that is, their main income came from own employment in 2021.
