WIESBADEN – Winegrowers in Germany expect the grape harvest to be better in 2022 than in 2021. Based on first estimates, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the 2022 grape harvest is expected to yield 8.88 million hectolitres of wine must. This would be an increase of 4.2% compared with the 2021 vintage (8.52 million hectolitres). The 2022 growing season was characterised by heat waves and drought in many wine-growing regions, and winegrowers, too, had to cope with dry soil conditions. Nevertheless, the grape yield is estimated to be slightly higher than the average of the years 2016 to 2021 (8.72 million hectolitres). There was no major damage from hail, storms or frost, and many young vineyards, which suffer from drought stress in particular, were irrigated. These factors contribute to the positive outlook.
