Press release No. 401 of 21 September 2022
- More than twice as many passengers in long-distance rail transport on a year earlier, but a fifth fewer than before the pandemic
- Public short-distance passenger transport records over a third more passengers due to the end of Covid-related measures and the introduction of the 9-euro ticket
- Particularly large growth and longer distances covered per passenger both in short-distance and long-distance transport in the 2nd half of 2022
WIESBADEN – Considerably more passengers used regular bus or rail transport services in the first half of 2022 than in the same period a year earlier. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the number of passengers (almost 4.8 billion) was by over a third higher (+36%) than in the first six months of 2021. Reasons are the end of Covid-related measures and the 9-euro ticket available for short-distance transport in June. However, the number of passengers in regular transport services was still lower by roughly a fifth (-21%) than in the first half of 2019, which was the last 6-month period before the Covid pandemic.
