WIESBADEN – The municipalities and associations of municipalities (excluding city states) reduced their financial deficit to 1.6 billion euros in the first half of 2022. In the first half of 2021 the deficit had amounted to just under 5.8 billion euros. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports this on the basis of quarterly cash statistics. The result is based on municipal core and extra budgets. In the first half of 2022, the deficit of the core budgets amounted to 2.0 billion euros. In the first half of 2021 it had been 6.8 billion euros. The extra budgets recorded a financial surplus of roughly 0.4 billion euros in the first half of 2022. In the same period a year earlier, the surplus had amounted to 1.0 billion euros.
