Press Percentage of degrees in health and social work activities in the highly qualified population below OECD average in 2021

Press release No. 421 of 5 October 2022

WIESBADEN – In the population with a tertiary qualification in Germany, just under one in ten had a degree in the subject group of health and social work activities (9.5%) in 2021. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this proportion was markedly below the OECD average (13.0%). One reason for the difference is that in many OECD countries – in contrast to Germany – care and social occupations require an academic qualification and, consequently, are included under the tertiary education sector. Tertiary qualifications include academic degrees such as Bachelor's and Master's degrees, but also vocationally oriented qualifications such as Master craftsman or technician certificates.

Selected OECD indicators for Germany are contained in the OECD publication "Education at a Glance".
