Press Coach industry 2020 and 2021: number of passengers down 77% from before the pandemic

  • 59 million fewer passengers took the coach in 2021 (excluding regular services) than two years earlier
  • The number of kilometres travelled by all passengers in 2021 amounted to a mere fifth of the transport performance in 2019

WIESBADEN – Much smaller numbers of people travelled longer distances by coach in the Covid years of 2020 and 2021 than before the pandemic. The number of coach passengers (excluding regular services) was down by more than three fourths (-77%) in each of the two years from the pre-crisis year of 2019. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports on the basis of provisional results that only 18 million travellers took the coach in 2021, which is a decline of 59 million from two years earlier. The number of operators organising coach tours other than scheduled long-distance transport dropped by 11%, or roughly 320, to 2,650 between 2019 and 2021.
