Press release No. 445 of 17 October 2022
WIESBADEN - In 2021, turnover in internet bookselling increased considerably for the second consecutive year. Online sales of books were up by another 16% from the first Covid year after having risen by 21% in 2020 from 2019. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office on the basis of data from the German Publishers and Booksellers Association, to coincide with the Frankfurt Book Fair taking place from 19 until 23 October 2022. Turnover in online bookselling amounted to 2.6 billion euros in 2021, thus accounting for more than a fourth (27%) of total turnover in the book trade (9.6 billion euros). Compared with 2019, that was an increase by 7 percentage points. Internet bookselling comprises all purchases of books made online, including those in the webshops of traditional bookstores. These and other results are contained in the new sector review on literature and press, which is available for download on the website of the Federal Statistical Office.
