- In eastern Germany, more than half of the children under three years are in day care, in western Germany just under a third
- More staff in day care centres but fewer professional child minders
WIESBADEN - Compared with a year earlier, the number of children under three years in day care increased by roughly 28,800 to stand at a total of 838,700 on 1 March 2022. This means that the number of children under three in day care rose by 3.6% from 1 March 2021. In Germany as a whole, the percentage of children under the age of three in day care was 35.5% (2021: 34.4%), according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The upward trend thus continued after having been interrupted in 2021. The number of staff in day care centres increased by 3.2% on the previous year whereas the number of professional child minders decreased by 2.7%.
