- Number of young people concerned fell for the fourth year in a row
- Just over one in two of the young people had lone parents; in two thirds of the cases, the young people or their families of origin received transfer payments
- On average, the young people were placed in foster families for just over four years and in residential homes for less than two years
WIESBADEN – In 2021, approximately 122,700 young people lived in a residential home and roughly 87,300 in a foster family in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that 210,000 young people were thus raised, at least temporarily, outside their family, as part of public children and youth welfare services. This was a decrease of 3%, or 6,700 young people, compared with a year earlier. The number of cases declined for the fourth year in a row.
