- Truck transport prevails in trade with other EU Member States

WIESBADEN – 395.0 million tonnes of goods were imported to Germany and 250.7 million tonnes of goods were exported from Germany between January and August 2022. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that 62.9% (248.3 million tonnes) of the imports came from other Member States of the European Union (EU), while 37.1% of the goods (146.7 million tonnes) were imported directly from countries outside the EU (third countries). Trade with EU countries accounted for 74.8% (187.4 million tonnes) of German exports, and 25.2% of the goods (63.3 million tonnes) were exported directly to third countries. In trade within the EU, most goods were transported by road in trucks, whereas maritime transport prevailed in trade with third countries. The quantity of goods transported by rail or aircraft was relatively small across the entire foreign trade.
