Press Criminal prosecution by the courts in 2021: convictions by final judgment down 5.3%

  • 662,100 people convicted in criminal proceedings
  • Just under one quarter of all convictions were due to traffic offences
  • Roughly 1,100 people convicted for illegal car racing

WIESBADEN – In 2021, the courts in Germany convicted approximately 662,100 defendants by final judgment. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was a decrease of roughly 37,200 defendants convicted, or 5.3%, compared with the previous year. The downward trend in the number of convictions observed for a number of years thus continued.
